Special Olympians Return Home

special-olympians-returnKingston, Jamaica – February 6, 2013 – When the 24 members of the Special Olympics Jamaica Team return home tomorrow, Thursday, February 7, on Caribbean Airlines Flight 016 at 5:50 AM from the 2013 Special Olympics World Winter Games, the atmosphere promises to be exciting.

Team Jamaica medaled in both sporting events they competed in and created history not only by their participation in the Ice Figure Skating competitions but also by winning silver medals.  Never, before now, has Jamaica been represented at a sporting event in Ice Figure Skating.  After all, this is Jamaica; no place for ice! Despite the odds,  our Ice Figure Skaters, Nigel Davis and Tamra Mitchell were determined and so shocked the world when they won silver medals in ice figure skating at the 2013 Special Olympics World Winter Games in Korea, home of the famous Gangnam Style.

The Floor Hockey Team took the Silver.  They were beaten 2-0 by Hungary.  It should be noted that at the 2009 World Winter Games the Floor Hockey Team won gold playing in Division 11.  At these games after the preliminaries they were placed in Division 1.

The team arrives in New York today where they will receive a warm welcome from Irwine Clare of Team Jamaica Bickle (TJB), before connecting to their flight home.

Thanks to all our sponsors for giving these athletes a chance.  A special thanks to Digicel, The Law Enforcement Officers and Sports Development Foundation (SDF) for making it possible not only for the athletes but for the media to experience first-hand what the Special Olympics movement is all about and its importance, as we continue our work towards inclusion for all.
